Thinking of parking your car illegally on the street?

Think again! In an effort to curb the practice of illegal parking, the government is planning to go ahead with a scheme that will see the enforcement of parking fines handed over, at least in part, to the private sector. This policy is set to commence in the middle of next year.

What does this mean for the average motorist? Well, you could end up receiving a fine from a private company employee (considered a civil service employee in his or her parking ‘regulator’ capacity) as (s)he happens across your illegally parked vehicle in the street. The privatization of this traditional police work is intended to allow police officers more time to go about ‘real’ police work.

If you have ever had a parking fine in Japan, you know it isn’t cheap. The cost can run you around 15,000 yen (USD $150) and the loss of 4 demerit points. ‘Ouch!’ So, although it might cause you some extra searching while looking for the ever-rare parking spot, it might just be worth it
