If someone ordered a man to swim before he had
ever learned to swim, everybody would say this
was impossible. Likewise, if someone ordered
a man to run before he had ever learned to run,
it would be taken as irrational as well. However,
we are almost always burdened by ridiculous
orders such as these from the time we are born.
Did we learn how to live when we were
in our mother’s womb? As soon
as we leave our mother’s body, we step
into a life which resembles a giant sports stadium.
Of course it is unreasonable to expect a man
who doesn’t know how to swim to swim well.
Further, a man who did not know how to run would
be likely to follow other runners. In light
of this, nobody would be able to leave the stadium
of life without having wounds all over the whole
of his body.
People
might say, “Look to your predecessors;
they will be good role models. However, you
could never learn to swim or become a good runner
immediately even if you watched hundreds of
swimmers or thousands of runners. Rather, every
swimmer swallows water, without exception and
all runners get covered with the mud of the
stadium. Even world famous athletes hide their
bitter faces behind their proud smiles.
Life
is like the Olympic games organized by mad men.
We have to learn how to struggle with life at
the same time we are actually struggling with
it. If you can’t help feeling anger during
this ridiculous game, you’d better step
out of the stadium immediately. However, if you
want to stay in the stadium, you should fight
without fearing to have wounds on you.
Life
resembles a box of matches. It is foolish to handle
it with too much care but it is dangerous to handle
without care.
Life
resembles a book with missing pages. It is hardly
said that it forms something, but it is something.
